SPX - Enterprise Development through Information and Communication Technology (EDICT)

Module 1: Introduction to the SPX Programme

In this suite of seven lectures, the learner will be introduced to the main thrusts of the Investment Promotion Programme of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The module starts with an overall assessment of the context of investment promotion, in particular that of foreign direct investment (FDI) in today’s globalized world. Tools for data collection of investor information and their presentation through UNIDO’s Investment Monitoring Platform are the subject of the second lecture which provides the wider context for subsequent lectures that focus on the Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange Programme (SPX).
The course highlights the increasing importance of industrial sub-contracting and local-foreign supply chain integration for the organization of effective international production systems. The basic objectives and the key outputs of the SPX (supplier profiling, supplier benchmarking, supplier upgrading, match-making) are introduced and this is complemented by experiences and success stories of existing SPX Centres that UNIDO has established in the past.

Objective

The Learner will attain good knowledge about the main framework, objectives and outputs of UNIDO's Subcontracting and Partnership Exchange Programme (SPX). This introductory course will lay the foundation for the Learner to delve deeper and better understand the following technical modules 2-6.

Module 2: Self Improvement within the firm

Module 3: Opportunity Identification and Matchmaking

The process of Buyer Opportunities being identified and developed and giving potential suppliers access in a structured methodology to these opportunities.

Objective

The Learners will attain a firm knowledge and understanding of the process (sequence and dynamics) of Buyer Opportunity Development and how to use it in actualising Buyer Supplier Matchmaking and in doing so, contributing to Investment Promotion in their Country.

Module 4: JV, Alliances and partnership promotion

The process of Buyer Opportunities being identified and developed and giving potential suppliers access in a structured methodology to these opportunities.

Objective

This course is intended as a training package addressed to developing countries’ entrepreneurs in order, to bring them to a good knowledge of current economic growth, MNE’s policies and operations and FDI flows; to help their competitive position and grow domestically and internationally by linking with foreign partners; to make them achieve technological self-sufficiency and innovative capabilities of their own.

Module 5: Basic materials for investment analysis

This M5 course and the next one (M6) deal with analysis and appraisal of a new and expansion investment projects from various points of direct shareholders such as investors, financiers, guarantors and suppliers. This M5, in particular, introduces and analyses the investment process structure focusing on the aspects related to market and marketing as well as facilities and logistic.

Objective

materials of this course is the first of two information sets aimed to provide the developing countries’ entrepreneurs with a good knowledge of all issues of a project investment. This “M5” package is aimed to provide the “learners” with a tool set of information to study, comprehend and build the right market, marketing and logistic frame of an investment project.

Module 6: Economic and financial tool-kit for investment analysis

This M6 course completes the study of the investment project analysis started in the former M5 course. It focuses on the elements and the process of the financial and economic analysis to use in the study/arrangement/implementation of an investment process.

Objective

This second information set about financial and economic issues of an investment process provides the tools to make a right financial and economic feasibility and sustainability study ; so to have the best result in the evaluation/analysis activity as well as the best final decision about to make the investment or not.

Module 7: Training of Entrepreneurs

The first module explains roles and players involved in the process of setting up an SPX Center, with the focus on entrepreneurs and their training as for example in terms of their identification and support.

Objective

The goal of this module is to show how to make the choice of the right entrepreneurs and how to train them.

Module 8: Building a Marketing System

This module focuses on marketing, explaining the importance of a good strategy, how to proceed to transform strategy into action, what are the right tools for an effective marketing strategy and how to transform strategy in a successful marketing for business.

Objective

The objective of this module is to prepare the entrepreneur for a successful achievement of the important marketing strategy for business.

Module 9: Enterprise Growth Training

This module focus on the growth of business. The possible ways to finance growth, tools like business plans, sources of financing for the growth and the rationale involved. It includes interviews with people who undertook the training sharing their experience.

Objective

The objective of this module is to develop the entrepreneur’s understanding of business growth, specifically how to achieve growth, what are the challenges involved and how to tackle them in order to be successful.

This last module provides a practical approach on some of the best practices for lending to small and medium enterprises.
